Abarnou, Alain; Simon, S.
This report is a synthesis of data concerning PCB concentrations in water, sediments and organisms (Bivalvia, Malacostraca, Pisces). Water analysis shows that Seine River is the primordial factor affecting PCB dispersion in the bay. Sediment contamination is higher near estuary along Calvados coast. PCB levels in Mytilidae and in Pectinidae set the problem of polluant origin, dispersion and effects on estuarine organisms.

Effect of xanthan on the growth of sulphate-reduction bacteria in marine sediments. ArchiMer
Battersby, N; Stewart, D; Sharma, A.
Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The products formed as a result of the biodegradation of the polymer by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in these sediments appear to have acted as suitable...

Terrom, G; Gil, G; Lepetit, J.
A bacterial community has been selected from a marine sediment on 4-cyclohexene-1,2 dicarboximide or THPI (fungicide). This community consists of nine strains. The "principal" strain, Photobacterium mandapamensis , degrades THPI by different metabolic pathways many of which require co-oxidative sequences. The other eight "auxiliary" strains occur at different states along the trophic chain formed by the "principal" strain, so increasing velocity and intensity of the THPI biodegradation.

Ameur, S.; Ghedira, J.; Guerbej, H.; Jebali, J.; Bouraoui, J.; Boussetta, H..

Heavy metals effect on bacterial communities from coastal sediments. ArchiMer
Modamio, X; Mallo, S.
The effects of heavy metals on bacterial communities of sea sediments are studied. Samples were taken from a very polluted zone near Barcelona. Bacterial populations were estimated by the plate count method, using culture medium amended with heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cr and Cu). The authors have also made a numerical taxonomy study with a hundred resistant strains, using 129 unit characters.

Plasmid-associated phenathrene degradation by Chesapeake Bay sediment bacteria. ArchiMer
Okpokwasili, G; Somerville, C; Grimes, D; Colwell, R.
A differential, phenanthrene-enrichment agar plating technique was used to isolate phenanthrene-degrading bacteria from phenanthrene-enriched Chesapeake Bay sediment. One of the isolates, a yellow pigmented, slime-producing, Gram-negative rod identified as Flavobacterium sp. has been studied in detail. It has been found to carry a single plasmid with a mass of about 34 megadaltons. Results of hydrocarbon adherence tests showed that the organism adhered only minimally to n-octane and n-hexadecane, but emulsified cyclohexylbenzene and 1,2,3,4,-tetrahydronaphthalene (tetralin). Curing of the plasmid with 3 mu g/ml novobiocin resulted in loss of phenanthrene clearing ability. Ability to degrade phenanthrene was confirmed using super(14)C-labeled phenanthrene.

Chauvin, P; Freger, G; Guyader, Julie.
Le Havre Harbour dredging wastes are deposited off Octeville and cause the spreading of muds in this area. Currents disperse the sediments on a large zone. Physico-chemical analysis show low micropolluants concentrations. Water quality seems not to be affected by these deposits, but a reduction of species living in the sediments is observed.

The dispersal of nitrogen-fixing Enterobacteriaceae from sewage into the waters and sediments of Morecambe Bay, UK. ArchiMer
Jones, K; Betaieb, M.
The sediments of Morecambe Bay contain large numbers of salinity-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing Enterobacteriaceae (NFEs) mainly Klebsiella pneumoniae ) which appear to be derived from sewage. Sewage effluents, regardless as to whether they have received primary or secondary treatment, contain huge numbers of NFEs with salinity-tolerant and freshwater strains present in roughly equal quantities. The bacteria are discharged into the rivers and estuaries and carried out to sea. Once in the sea the salinity-tolerant strains retain their viability better than the freshwater strains so that the incoming tide, which doses the sediments, contains mainly salinity-tolerant NFEs. It is probable that similar processes occur all round the U.K. coast, as inshore coastal...
